Collection of Kate Shelley materials, bulk circa 1956.

The collection includes correspondence, clippings and ephemera related to the dedication of the Kate Shelley memorial at Boone, Iowa (July 6, 1956) and the proclamation of Kate Shelley Week by the governor of Iowa; issues of The Conductor and brakeman (a periodical published in Cedar Rapids, Iowa devoted to railroads and their employees) with articles featuring Shelley; and several photos of Kate Shelley and her family. The Conductor and brakeman issues in the collection are June and October, 1955 and January, June and August 1956. The materials were collected by Sally and Robert McCullough, relations of Shelley.

Kate Shelley (also spelled Shelly) was born in Ireland about 1864 to Michael and Margaret (Dawn) Shelley. The family immigrated to the United States in 1865 and settled on a homestead on Honey Creek near Moingona, Boone County, Iowa. Michael Shelley found work on the Chicago and North-Western Railway, and was eventually made a foreman of a section crew. He died in 1878, leaving his wife Margaret to care for the family.
